As laranjas…
Tem aparecido um texto que refere que foram os Portugueses a introduzir a laranja na Europa. Além do erro em torno do parsi (farsi ou parse), ou persa, na sua forma é uma língua apenas oficial no Irão (nem é oficial no Afeganistão…), já que o Dari (esta sim, oficial no Afeganistão) é uma língua similar, como é o Tajique (no Tajiquistão), que também não é falado na Arménia nem na Geórgia, também é abusivo dizer que foram os Portugueses a introduzir a fruta na Europa no século XVI.
A arte é soberana e é preciso lê-la bem, além de ver e fruir. Apresento aqui um caso de uma obra de arte onde se demonstra que as laranjas existiam já na Europa antes da putativa introdução lusa das mesmas na Europa no século XVI. Veja-se então "O Retrato de Giovanni Arnolfini e sua esposa", obra de 1434, de Jan van Eyck (c. 1390-1441), óleo sobre tela (82 cm × 60 cm), National Gallery, Londres. Repare-se no lado esquerdo (do observador) da composição (apesar dela própria ser uma visão a partir do espelho…): umas laranjas no e abaixo do parapeito da janela. A obra foi pintada em Bruges, cidade onde se tinha estabelecido desde 1420 o então rico comerciante Giovanni Arnolfini, aqui em esponsais com Giovanna Cenami. Sim, é a realização de um acto matrimonial, no quarto sim. E a Giovanna não está grávida, aquietem-se desde já…
As laranjas lá estão, todavia, um século antes da pretensa introdução portuguesa. Elas já andavam na Europa desde as invasões árabo-berberes islâmicas do século VIII. No caso da obra, ilustram precisamente a origem meridional do casal, da orla mediterrânica. Eram também conhecidas, as laranjas, então, como "maçãs do Éden", numa alusão ao pecado mortal da luxúria, provável motivo da perda da graça e da destruição dos casamentos. O acto matrimonial era assim a forma de superação desse pecado que conduziu ao “paraíso perdido”…
A palavra “laranja”, já agora vejamos as sacras etimologias, supõe-se, quando muito, que possa derivar do Proto-Dravidiano ou Tamil (Sul da Índia) நாரம் (nāram). A partir daí a palavra entrou no sânscrito नारङ्ग (nāraṅga ou nagrungo), que significa 'laranjeira'. A palavra sânscrita alcançou as línguas europeias através do persa نارنگ (nārang) e depois do árabe نارنج (nāranj).
A palavra entrou no “middle english” tardio no século XIV através do francês antigo “orenge” (na frase “pomme d'orenge”). A palavra francesa, por sua vez, vem do antigo provençal “auranja”, baseado na referida palavra árabe. A cor recebeu o nome da fruta, e o primeiro uso registado de laranja como nome de cor em inglês data de 1512. A primeira menção da laranja doce na literatura chinesa data de 314 a. C..
Na Europa, a laranja foi introduzida por povos islamizados do Norte de África, primeiramente na Península Ibérica, no famoso Al-Andalus, com um cultivo em grande escala a partir do século X, como é aliás evidenciado por técnicas complexas de irrigação especificamente adaptadas para sustentar pomares de laranja (no Levante ibérico, por exemplo, ou no Algarve). As frutas cítricas - entre elas a laranja amarga - foram introduzidas na Sicília no século IX durante o período islâmico do chamado Emirado da Sicília. Na Europa, a laranja doce não era muito conhecida antes do século XV, ou até mesmo ao início do século XVI, quando comerciantes italianos e portugueses trouxeram laranjeiras para a área do Mediterrâneo.

The oranges…
A text has appeared
that states that it was the Portuguese who introduced oranges to Europe. In
addition to the error surrounding Parsi (Farsi or Parse), or Persian, in its
form, it is only an official language in Iran (nor is it official in
Afghanistan...) since Dari (which is official in Afghanistan) is a language
similar, as is Tajik (in Tajikistan), which is also not spoken in Armenia or
Georgia, it is also abusive to say that the Portuguese introduced the fruit to
Europe in the 16th century.

it well and seeing and enjoying it is necessary. Here, I present a case of a
work of art demonstrating that oranges existed in Europe before the putative
Portuguese introduction into Europe in the 16th century.

left side (of the observer) of the composition (although it is a view from the
mirror...): some oranges on and below the windowsill. The work was painted in
Bruges, the city where the then-wealthy merchant Giovanni Arnolfini had settled
since 1420 in marriage with Giovanna Cenami. Yes, it is the performance of a
marital act in the bedroom. And Giovanna is not pregnant, so calm down now.
Oranges were there,
however, a century before the supposed Portuguese introduction. They have been
around Europe since the Islamic Arab-Berber invasions of the 8th century. In
the case of the work, they precisely illustrate the couple's southern origin
from the Mediterranean coast. Oranges were also known then as "apples of
Eden" in an allusion to the mortal sin of lust, a probable reason for the
loss of grace and the destruction of marriages. The act of marriage was thus
the way of overcoming this sin that led to “paradise lost” …
The word “orange”, now
let's look at the sacred etymologies, is supposed, at best, to derive from the
Proto-Dravidian or Tamil (South Indian) நாரம் (nāram). From
there, the word entered Sanskrit नारङ्ग (nāraṅga or nagrungo), which means
'orange tree'. The Sanskrit word reached European languages through Persian نارنگ (nārang) and then Arabic نارنج (nāranj).
The word entered late
Middle English in the 14th century through the Old French “orenge” (in the
phrase “pomme d'orenge”). The French word, in turn, comes from the old
Provençal “auranja”, based on the Arabic word. The colour is named after the
fruit, and the first recorded use of orange as a colour name in English dates to
1512. The first mention of sweet orange in Chinese literature dates to 314 BC.
In Europe, oranges
were introduced by Islamic peoples from North Africa, firstly in the Iberian
Peninsula, in the famous Al-Andalus, with large-scale cultivation from the 10th
century onwards, as evidenced by complex irrigation techniques specifically adapted
to support orange orchards (in the Iberian Levant, for example, or in the
Algarve). Citrus fruits - including bitter orange - were introduced to Sicily
in the 9th century during the Islamic period of the so-called Emirate of
Sicily. The sweet orange was not well known in Europe before the 15th century
or even the early 16th century, when Italian and Portuguese traders brought
orange trees to the Mediterranean.
